Why we switched to disposable diapers…

////////////////////////////////////////////////
UPDATE: I forgot that the extended entry appears automatically in my RSS feed. I apologize for terrorizing any of my feed readers (although it appears I’ve already scared one into not having children). This is the true power of poop.
////////////////////////////////////////////////
I mentioned previously that we were devoting much effort to going greener by using cloth diapers. Well today, I am officially announcing we are going ungreen and switching mainly to disposables.
There are 3 main reasons for this:

  1. Cloth diapers can no longer hold his big loads (we started supplementing breast milk with formula, which causes rather, erm, voluminous eruptions)
  2. Disposable diapers very effectively draw wetness away from his skin, allowing him to sleep through several wettings (cloth diapers pretty much have to be changed immediately)
  3. Washing 20-30 diapers plus 15-20 towels, changing sheets, and body wraps of various sizes every day is feasible only if weather conditions are favorable (dry and sunny) since we employ neither bleach nor a clothes dryer. It has been raining quite often as of late (very strange for this time of year), and if washing 30 diapers in a day sounds bad, you should try washing 90 after two straight days of rain! (yes, we have quite a few.)

Anyways, if you have the stomach for it, I have decided to illustrate the first point above in the clearest way possible. Click on the link below IF YOU DARE.

  1. oh dear lord! the picture appears automatically in the RSS feed, J!
    nope, not gonna have kids. can’t handle it. too icky.

  2. LOL. I know this only too well. And I was amazed to find how little I actually minded the stuff. I also have some poo photos… – which I didn’t share. Felt too strange to take a photo in the first place. I’m quite relieved I’m not the only one! 😀
    It’s really nice when you get to the stage where the poo is leaving the nappy and wanders all the way up the back. One time I had to cut open his underwear and throw it away as I didn’t want to pull the sticky mess over his head. (Only with diarrhoea it gets really disgusting and made my partner barf once.)
    Good news is that it gets better over time, especially once you give more solid food. Yannick now does very civilised poos most of the time.

  3. Yup, welcome to the world of upping your tolerance to baby poo. You were a heavy duty, up-the-back, out the sides super-duper pooper too! And the thing is, at least the current odor is okay. Breast milk poo is not as stinky as formula poo, but when they get to including solids, it gets incrementally stinkier. And as soon as meat is introduced to the diet, geez….
    He looks very content!

  4. We cloth diaper during the day & use disposables at night time & on trips. We have found this combination to be very effective.

  5. I have High Functining Aspergers Syndrome but I also have Traits of Low Functining Classic Autisum, Developmental Dyspraxia, Pervasive Developmental Disorder among other things, this is the reason why I have been incontinent all my life and I just got to say it that picture looks like my poopy diapers when my mum changes me. I was curius as to what my poop looked like so asked her to take a picture once it looked something like that but im not posting it.Im 24
