Around Mahasarakham,  Thai Society/Culture

Bai Larn and Buddhas

Went to the Issan Cultural Institute at the old MSU campus today with Nam’s students. Hadn’t been inside there since Mina did a storytelling event there a few years back.

This building is easily recognized by its deeply sloped roof, and is a landmark of Maha Sarakham. Nam’s dad oversaw the construction when he was the director. During his tenure, His Majesty the King, Rama IV, came to help cast the town Buddhas, one of which was eventually moved here to the Institute grounds.

What a happy fella!

There’s a great exhibition of bai larn (palm leaf manuscripts) on the third floor.

Nam’s students seemed to enjoy it as well, so it was a good day!
