Higo is the old name for Kumamoto, the prefecture in Japan where I started this blog. I had just gotten into photography and keeping a record of my strange experiences and rambling on about funny things that I remembered. Mostly I wanted to process all of the experiences that I was absorbing: What did horse sashimi taste like? What the hell was that thing that crawled out of the drain of my sumo-sized bath? How did I escape major injury? How can getting lost be so rewarding and fun? Just how many interests can I pursue? What’s the best music to blast when you’re driving fast on an isolated mountain pass with rain pouring faster than the wipers are able to adequately perform their function?
These are the questions that resulted in the words, pictures and other embedded media that you see in the archives.
Though I returned to the US and continued blogging, I didn’t rename the blog because that’s where it was created, and I couldn’t think of a replacement name. Slowly, my post frequency dwindled to long, fallow periods. These days, it feels like a luxury to be able to write without any agenda other than for the sake of creative self-expression. Logging in to Higo Blog nowadays feels mildly like being transported to another place and time, when the web was more fun to explore.
I hope you enjoy your visit, thanks for reading!
