Chameleon is absorbing the finer points of island life. In terms of living on a small island of an island chain. Living on an island chain while trying to lead a normal life is a bit like playing a board game. If you start on a small island, you try and move to a bigger island, because in general, the larger landmasses have more to offer in terms of convenience and entertainment. Salaryman started out on the largest island, Honshu, and now lives on an island off the coast of it. Basically, he has moved his piece backward in terms of finishing the game. This is evident from his current environment and the natives that inhabit it. The kicker is that Salaryman did not attain his current lifestyle by landing on the Go to Jail space (Do not pass Go, do not collect $200). He drew a card of chance that proclaimed "You have received an offer to work at one of the last holdouts of Japanese megalomania, on a small island. If you accept, you will be rewarded greatly." In retrospect, Salaryman feels the word "rewarded" should have been replaced with "recompensed."
The first time Salaryman set eyes on his soon-to-be hometown, he was humbled. The jeep he had borrowed from his friend could actually come in handy! Little comforts like mud tires and auto-locking hubs might turn out to be convenient. Whereas the jeep produced mixed reactions in the big city (half despise and half wonderment at the stupidity of someone that would buy such a car), it was almost a status symbol here;
