It’s funny how the universe drops what you’re looking for right in front of you when you’re least expecting it. In my last post, I wrote about how inducing neuroplasticity is a key ingredient for writing blog posts. A repetitive, familiar routine doesn’t provide me with as many opportunities to let the words flow or make me inclined to share. I was doing dishes (not blog worthy material), reflecting on the spontaneous adventures that were a part of my life when I was more actively blogging, when I heard someone calling for help outside my apartment.

I ran down to find an elementary school kid who was down on the asphalt and had hit his head, body and back pack sprawled on the asphalt. I assessed the basics (assessing an abrasion and perfusion, looking at pupil dilation, asking questions to judge his mental function, and keeping an eye out for other signs of trauma that might be problematic) and called for help, verbally and over the phone. It was encouraging that many came over to help. We tracked down his caretakers, who we sent to the hospital to get the kid checked out, and called it a day.

It was a good refresher to emergency response, and I’m glad it wasn’t worse, considering the speed the kid could have worked up on the descent down a steep, slippery hill, flying head first on to a raised curb. Head injuries are scary, the magnitude of injury isn’t always readily apparent, but I got the sense that everything is going to be OK.

Incident Debrief Notes:

  • Crocs are generally a poor choice when you need traction, engage in agility, don’t want your foot eaten by an escalator, etc.
  • If you have a kid, it is crucial that you help them to remember an emergency contact number and your address. Phones can get lost, and there is no app to completely replace remembering certain types of critical information.
  • Calling out for help when you need it is generally a good thing.
  • It pays to be prepared, and to keep your phone and first aid kit ready to grab on your way out the door (thanks neighbor!).

So, now that it appears that the Universe is listening intently (thanks for the impromptu neuroplasticity workout), I would like to direct energy over to manifesting continued growth of the five types of wealth (time, mental, physical, financial and social) as an ongoing practice. I believe I would use my wealth beneficially, and in a way that does net positive and helps others. Thanks in advance, Universe, I look forward to our continued collaboration!
