Most folks from Japan once at the California shoreline will tell you about he lack of a distinct odor. Doesn't smell like the ocean - most will say. Analysis??

yeah, all the time we drove by or walked along the coastline in Japan, it struck me that it didn't smell like the briny ocean smell here in California.
And without that scent, the whole ocean experience felt peculiar, like seeing cookies at the bakery and not being able to smell the yumminess of baked goodies.

addendum. Now that I think about it, Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach in its heyday (circa 1960's) had a similar odor to the seaside in Japan. Senility or a vivid imagination - probably the same.
